There are 27 Vedic and 28 Arabic and Chinese lunar (moon) mansions spread over 14 constellations on the Zodiac belt. These constellations are: Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Orion, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Ophiuchus, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius.

It takes the moon 28 days to orbit around the earth. That is about a month (moon). It takes 7 days from the new moon 0° to the first quarter 90° , then 7 days to the full moon 180°, then 7 days to the last quarter 270° and then 7 days back to the new moon 360° (0° starting point). The period from one new moon to the next new moon is called a 'lunation'.

That is where the concept of 4 weeks in a month comes from. On the 1st, 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day it is not a good time to make a wish. Rather a day or two after those days. Those are the days to pray and fast. The 19th day counting from the new moon is also not considered a good day.

The moon is closest to the earth and so exerts a powerful influence on our characters, daily activities, feelings, emotions, the way we think. The moon largely influences the weather and tides of the ocean. The moon moves to a new mansion every day.

There are 27 Moon Mansions in Vedic Astrology and 28 Moon Mansions in Chinese and Arabic Astrology. The Ecliptic Zodiac Band surrounding the earth is 360 degrees. Saturn is presently visiting this mansion, teaching us to be kind and compassionate.

Vesak is the most important of the Buddhist festivals and is celebrated on the full moon in May (Vaisakha). It celebrates the Buddha's birthday, and, for some Buddhists, also marks his enlightenment and death.
Traditionally called Buddha Purnima, Purnima meaning the full moon day in Sanskrit.

Celebrations

Wesak is celebrated with much colour and gaiety. Homes may be cleaned and decorated. In many countries during the festival, Buddhists will visit their local temple for services and teaching, and will give offerings to the monks of food, candles and flowers. Chanting and praying are an important part of Wesak. Offer flowers, incense, candles and lights.This is a day to remember to live a righteous and noble life, to practice loving-kindness and to bring peace and harmony to humanity. The 'Bathing the Buddha' ceremony is also often included. Water is poured over the shoulders of the Buddha as a reminder to purify their own minds from greed, hatred and ignorance. Gifts are taken to an altar to be offered to the Buddha statues. This shows respect and gratitude to the Buddha for his life and teachings.

Bringing happiness to others[edit]
Celebrating Vesākha also means making special efforts to bring happiness to the unfortunate like the aged, the handicapped and the sick. To this day, Buddhists will distribute gifts in cash and kind to various charitable homes throughout the country. Vesākha is also a time for great joy and happiness, expressed not by pandering to one’s appetites but by concentrating on useful activities such as decorating and illuminating temples, painting and creating exquisite scenes from the life of the Buddha for public dissemination. Devout Buddhists also vie with one another to provide refreshments and vegetarian food to followers who visit the temple to pay homage to the Enlightened One.

In Indonesia, Wesak lanterns are made from paper and wood. Feed the birds, feed the dreams.

Pupids-Velids Meteor Showers (shooting stars) from 3 to 15 December. Its mother comet is 26P/Grigg-Skjellerup. The stars shoot north-east of Orion.

Geminids Meteor Showers (shooting stars) from 7 to 17 December. Peaks 12, 13, 14 December.

Marker Star: Castor, the Mortal Twin of Gemini (18° - 20° Cancer), the horse whisperer. He loves horses, horse-power and travelling.

The Geminids shoot yellowish stars at the rate of about one per minute. Among them may be earth grazers which are long, bright shooting stars. The Geminids should peak around 13 December. This will make sighting more possible as the sky will be dark. On a mundane level this means that we will be able to see things more clearly but warns us against impulse control actions such as speeding and overspending. The energy will last for a couple of days.

Geminids meteor showers originate from an Apollo, a near-earth asteroid named 3200 Phaethon. In mythology Phaeton is a young man driven to prove himself regardless of the consequences. Phaeton was the son of Helios, the sun god, who drove his shiny chariot drawn by four fiery and powerful steeds across the sky each day to light and warm the earth. Phaeton wished to drive his father's chariot and in the process scorched the earth creating the Sahara desert. Zeus hit the boy with a thunderbolt to stop him. Hence the term, careful what you wish for.

The modern day version of the myth is the well known Santa Claus and his sleigh being pulled by his famous reindeer: Rudolph, Dasher, Dancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and Blitzen (lightning).

Currently three meteor showers grace our celestial sphere:
Perseids, Alpha Capricomids and Delta Aquarriids.

During this time it is important to bear in mind that sometimes we have to sacrifice or let go of something in order to gain something better. Remember that to be your own saviour and hero!

Perseids

The Perseids Meteor Showers usually starts mid-July and peaks between 9 to 14 August.

The'Blessings and Light', appear to come from the comet Swift-Tuttle 109 that orbits the sun with a period of 130 years. Comet 1863 is also associated with it. They shower at an hourly rate of 173. Unfortunately, it is not visible in South Africa as it is below the horizon.

Mythology: Jupiter visited Danae in the form of a 'Shower of Gold'and from this union Perseus was born. Perseus killed Medussa and Saved Andromeda from Cetus, the sea monster. They gave birth to Perseid.

Perseus blesses us with: flash of inspiration, flash of insight, flash of money luck, unusual and unexpected happenings, vivid dreams, unusual psychic visions and experiences, unexpected gifts and blessings.
